So the die is cast - Kenny will swim four individual events at the Central California Junior Olympics later this month: 400 meter Free, 100 meter Back, 50 meter Free and 50 meter Back. Maybe some relays, too.

I have to give my kid a shout-out here. In January, he said his resolution was to swim at the JOs. I crushed his dream in that moment by pointing out he was aging up in June and the time standards were out of his reach.

In mid-April, his coach told him he could achieve the cuts if he committed himself then and there and worked his butt off going forward.

I'm so glad he listened to his coach instead of me. For the last 13 weeks, that boy has given 100% at practice, completed extra dry land workouts, watched his nutrition and hydration, and dug deep to find a new level of "competitor" during meets.

What a kid. He may or may not swim anything more than preliminary heats in a couple weeks, but he's already a winner. And he learned first hand how hard work can pay off.
